Norwegian technologist, Dr. Bjørn Kvamme, will help meet growing industry demand
Strategic Carbon LLC, a global environmental science-consulting firm based in Portsmouth, NH, has added a third partner to a worldwide effort to provide major oil and gas producers and developers more precise, verifiable, and environmentally secure scientific procedures. Dr. Bjørn Kvamme, professor of physics and technology at the University of Bergen, Norway, will join the consulting firm as a partner. Dr. Richard Coffin and Kevin Stickney founded Strategic Carbon in 2011.
Dr. Kvamme is known worldwide for his research and fieldwork in CO2, EOR, methane hydrate, and other specialties. A seasoned professor for over 30 years, Dr. Kvamme has authored and co-written over 450 publications covering research in thermodynamics, non-equilibrium and statistical thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, and molecular simulations. Dr. Kvamme is proficient in carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and storage, enhanced oil recovery (EOR), zeolite systems, and methane hydrate production modeling and risk analysis. A graduate of the Bergen College of Engineering, Dr. Kvamme received his doctorate in chemical engineering from The Norwegian Institute of Technology.
“I am thrilled to join the Strategic Carbon team,” said Dr. Kvamme. “The firm has made significant strides in working with oil and gas companies and governments to clearly identify and safely manage environmental risk.”
The Company has partnered with universities worldwide, including The University of Bergen, Texas A&M (Corpus Christi), University of Hawaii at Manoa, University of Auckland, New Zealand, and the Norwegian Institute for Water Research. Strategic Carbon and its partners collaborate on projects involving ocean science, technology, and environmental and energy management for companies and governments worldwide. Dr. Coffin and university colleagues operate a state-of the-art geochemical laboratory at Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
“I am pleased to welcome Bjørn to the firm,” said Dr. Coffin. “We’ve worked around the world together on various projects throughout the years. His expertise and knowledge will be a valuable addition to Strategic Carbon’s capabilities.”
Dr. Coffin and Stickney developed Strategic Carbon as a consulting firm focused on the location and analysis of methane hydrates for global energy use. Recent global issues have led the firm to pursue consulting roles in environmental monitoring and “fingerprinting” of shale gas extraction, enhanced oil recovery operations, and the safe remediation of oil and gas spills. Since 2011, Strategic Carbon experts were retained by the Chinese National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC) and Chinese National Petroleum Company (CNPC) to provide educational forums in New York City and Washington, D.C. Recently, the Southwest Petroleum University in Chengdu, China, hired Strategic Carbon to teach a multi-year class on gas hydrate and stability. The firm is in discussions with several other oil and gas majors to propose monitoring, fingerprinting, remediation, and other environmental services and analysis.
