Portsmouth, N.H., October 18, 2012 – Strategic Carbon LLC, a global science-based energy and environmental consulting and development enterprise partially owned by Calypso Communications, recently visited Norway to complete a strategic network of world-class research institutions designed to support the company’s growth.
In Norway, Strategic Carbon Founder Dr. Richard Coffin and Co-Founder and Calypso President Kevin Stickney met with senior research faculty at the University of Bergen to initiate the last of a series of agreements between Strategic Carbon and global institutions. The University of Bergen will help Strategic Carbon develop and test predictive models for deep-ocean sediment gas hydrate energy potential, carbon dioxide sequestration residence time, and environmental assessment, with specific focus on the Arctic.
Also in Norway, the Strategic Carbon team finalized an alliance with the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) to assess deep-ocean sediment gas hydrate energy potential and carbon dioxide sequestration residence time and environmental impact, as well as ecosystem contaminant natural attenuation and source identification. The Strategic Carbon/NIVA alliance will focus initially on NIVA programs in Norwegian waters, but will transition to global projects.
“We are pleased to announce our relationships with the University of Bergen and NIVA, the latest in a series of agreements formalized this year with research institutions around the world,” said Kevin Stickney, Strategic Carbon co-founder and Calypso Communications president. “These collaborations support Strategic Carbon’s research, laboratory, and development efforts, and will advance our understanding of carbon-based ecosystem and energy management.”
Since the beginning of the year, Strategic Carbon has visited and executed agreements with the University of Hawaii International Center for Climate and Society (ICCS) and Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI) for their collective expertise in climate change, methane hydrate exploration, oil spill source and fate assessment, and carbon dioxide sequestration; Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi for geochemistry expertise in coastal ocean and land energy and ecosystem issues; and the University of Auckland, New Zealand, for both geophysics and geology capabilities worldwide.
Strategic Carbon was formed to provide advanced analysis, technology, and services for Methane Hydrate energy exploration and Carbon Sequestration in deep ocean sediment, as well as both short- and long-term analyses of Ecosystem Health related to ocean-based energy mining and other commercial activities. Strategic Carbon also offers premier expertise for analytical services, crisis planning, commercial intervention, and political and regulatory testimony for energy industry accidents, spills, explosions, and natural crises.
Strategic Carbon will serve a global marketplace that includes coastal nations and governments across the developed and developing world; publicly and privately held oil and gas majors, energy service companies, and joint ventures; petrochemical industry supply chain partners and providers; major oceanographic academic institutions and partners; and private research, defense, energy, and environmental organizations.
As partial owner of Strategic Carbon, Calypso provides experienced, energy industry-focused web development, strategic public and investor relations, and design services for the company.
